Wizards of the Coast Issues DMCA on Fan's Baldur's Gate 3 Stardew Valley Mod, Larian CEO Responds

Wizards of the Coast has recently enforced a DMCA takedown on a fan-created mod for Stardew Valley, titled "Baldur's Village," which integrated characters from Baldur's Gate 3 into the game. This action came despite earlier public support from Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke, who had praised the mod on Twitter, calling it "amazing work" shortly after its release earlier this month.

The mod's removal was confirmed by a Nexus Mods spokesperson to PC Gamer, attributing the takedown to Wizards of the Coast, the company that owns the rights to Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate. The spokesperson expressed hope that this might be an oversight by Wizards of the Coast, which often uses external agencies to monitor and address IP violations, and suggested that the decision might be reversed.

In response to the takedown, Vincke took to Twitter again, reiterating his support for the mod while acknowledging the complexities of IP protection. He emphasized that fan mods, particularly those of high quality, serve as a testament to the impact of the original work and should not be treated as commercial infringements. "Free quality fan mods highlighting your characters in other game genres are proof your work resonates and a unique form of word of mouth," Vincke stated, expressing hope for a resolution that respects both IP rights and fan creativity.

This incident may be part of a broader strategy by Wizards of the Coast to protect the Baldur's Gate IP, especially with upcoming announcements expected soon, as hinted at during the Game Developers Conference. It remains to be seen whether this takedown was a deliberate move or a mistake that will be corrected. [ttpp] has reached out to Wizards of the Coast for further comment on this matter.
