Blizzard is set to introduce an unprecedented feature to World of Warcraft: an in-game combat assistant that recommends optimal spell sequences during battles. The upcoming Rotation Assist system in patch 11.1.7 will visually highlight recommended abilities while also offering an optional one-button auto-cast mode with a minor performance penalty.

During a developer interview with Team Liquid's Maximum and content creator Dratnos, game director Ion Hazzikostas explained this bold move aims to bridge the skill gap while reducing reliance on third-party add-ons. The system intelligently analyzes combat situations to suggest optimal ability sequences based on your spec and current battle conditions.

Addressing the Add-On Dilemma

"We don't want new players to feel they need mods just to perform basic rotations," Hazzikostas stated, referencing popular add-ons like Hekili that currently fill this functionality gap. "This gives native support while still maintaining skill expression - the single-button mode comes with an intentional disadvantage through extended global cooldowns."

Blizzard sees this as the first step in a larger initiative to integrate essential combat information directly into the UI. The developer emphasized this won't impact non-combat add-ons, but represents a philosophical shift toward making core gameplay more accessible.
