Home > News > SwitchArcade Round-Up: Reviews Featuring ‘Ace Attorney Investigations Collection’, Plus New Releases and Sales
Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but let's not forget the good times. This week brings a bounty of game reviews, exciting new releases, and some tempting sales. Let's dive in!
The Nintendo Switch continues to give us second chances at classic games. The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, featuring Miles Edgeworth's adventures, is a prime example. This collection cleverly builds upon previous storylines, making the sequel even more rewarding. The shift in perspective to the prosecution's side offers a fresh take on the familiar gameplay. While the pacing can feel uneven at times, fans of the main Ace Attorney series will find much to enjoy. If the first game feels a bit slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.
Bonus features are plentiful, including an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the ability to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. The inclusion of a dialog history is a welcome addition. Overall, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is a must-have for fans, offering a compelling narrative and excellent extras. Now, every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is available on Switch!
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
A sequel to the obscure NES classic Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome addition. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel delivers six challenging levels of physics-based platforming. The difficulty is high, but an easier mode is available for those seeking a less demanding experience. Yumetaro's star attack returns, serving as a versatile tool for both combat and puzzle-solving. Collectibles add replay value, unlocking customization options.
While potentially lengthy, the generous checkpoints prevent frustration from overwhelming the experience. The charming visuals and music add to the game's appeal. Gimmick! 2 successfully builds upon its predecessor without losing its own identity. It's a must-play for fans of the original and challenging platformers alike. However, be warned: it's just as difficult as the original, even on easy mode.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion boldly shifts gears from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style. While the Switch's hardware might struggle at times, the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and creepy visuals still deliver a compelling experience. The weapon system adds depth, requiring strategic management of your primary gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon. Mastering the rhythm of combat is key to survival.
While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion retains the original's distinctive atmosphere. Despite performance limitations on the Switch, it remains an enjoyable and unique shoot 'em up.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
A licensed game, naturally catering to fans of the Umamusume franchise. The game excels in its fan service, delivering strong writing and meta-systems that reward dedicated players. However, for those unfamiliar with the source material, the limited number of repetitive mini-games offer little appeal. Even for fans, the gameplay might feel thin after a while.
While the presentation is excellent, the lack of substantial gameplay hinders its overall enjoyment. The unlockable mini-game is a highlight, but the overall experience feels too short-lived.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft's Japanese library, offering three charming 8-bit games: Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games are fully localized for the first time, a feat worth celebrating. The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.
The games themselves vary in quality, with some being more frustrating than others. However, each game offers a unique charm and historical significance. Fans of Sunsoft and retro gaming will appreciate this collection's careful preservation and localization.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
A challenging run-and-gun action game in the style of Metal Slug and Contra, offering both solo and local multiplayer modes.
A stealth-focused game where you must hide from a creepy stalker while maintaining power generators.
A mining simulation game where you pilot mechs to collect ores and expand your operations.
A selection of sales are highlighted, including Nora: The Wannabe Alchemist, Deflector, Sky Caravan, and many more. Check the full lists for more details.
That's all for today! More reviews and new releases are on the way. See you tomorrow!
