Switch 2 Features New Controller Functions

New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The buzz surrounding the Switch 2 has been amplified with the revelation of new features for its joy-con, notably the inclusion of mouse support. On February 6, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released a publication detailing a patent filed by Nintendo for the Switch 2's joy-con controllers. This document sheds light on the innovative functionalities of these controllers, with a particular focus on their mouse-like capabilities. The concept of joy-cons functioning as a mouse was hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer, where the controller was seen being dragged across a flat surface. This patent essentially confirms the rumors and speculations that have been circulating since the trailer's release, despite Nintendo's usual secrecy about the Switch 2's details.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The joy-con for the Switch 2 retains the familiar design of the original Nintendo Switch, with detachable joy-cons that can be used independently or attached to the console. The standout feature, as highlighted in the patent, is the ability of the Switch 2's joy-con to function as a mouse. According to the publication, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface." This innovative feature allows for a new level of interaction with the console.

Additionally, the joy-cons can be charged using a new charging dock capable of charging up to two joy-cons simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment connects the joy-con to the console and includes a wrist strap, reminiscent of the original joy-con design. The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, resembling a standard controller split in half, each equipped with an optical sensor on the side. These controllers can also function as a mouse and can be combined into a standard controller using a separate attachment.

It's important to note that the features described in the patent may not necessarily reflect the final product for the Switch 2, as Nintendo has yet to make any official announcements regarding the joy-con's functions or other related devices.
