Stardew Friendships: Demystifying the Love Meter

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 27,2025

This guide details how to maximize friendship levels in Stardew Valley, a crucial aspect of the game. Building relationships with villagers through kindness and generosity unlocks unique events and dialogue. While talking and gifting are key, not all actions are equal in their impact on friendship points.

The Heart Scale:

Heart Scale

The in-game heart menu shows friendship levels with each NPC. Each heart represents 250 friendship points. Reaching certain heart levels unlocks special events, mail, and dialogue options.

Friendship Point Values:

Gaining one heart requires 250 points. Actions impact friendship positively or negatively:

  • Talking: +20 (or +10 if the NPC is busy). Ignoring an NPC daily results in a -2 point penalty (-10 with a bouquet given, -20 for a spouse).
  • Bulletin Board Deliveries: +150 with the recipient.
  • Gifts:
    • Loved: +80
    • Liked: +45
    • Neutral: +20
    • Disliked: -20
    • Hated: -40
    • Winter Star Festival Gifts: 5x points
    • Birthday Gifts: 8x points

Boosting Friendship Gain:

The "Friendship 101" book (available from the Prize Machine or the Bookseller in Year 3) permanently increases friendship gains by 10%.

Special Gifts and Interactions:

  • Stardrop Tea: +250 points (one heart), tripled on birthdays and the Winter Star Festival. Obtainable from the Prize Machine, Golden Fishing Chests, Helper's Bundle, or Raccoons.
  • Movie Theater: Inviting an NPC to the movies grants points based on movie and concession choices. Loved movie: +200, Liked movie: +100, Loved concession: +50, Liked concession: +25.
  • Conversations: Dialogue choices can yield +10 to +50 points or result in point deductions.
  • Heart Events: Dialogue choices during Heart Events significantly impact friendship (+/- 200 points).
  • Flower Dance: Dancing with an NPC (4 hearts or higher) grants +250 points.
  • Luau: Contributing to the community soup yields varying points based on soup quality.
  • Community Center (Bulletin Board Bundles): Completing all Bulletin Board bundles rewards +500 points (two hearts) with each non-dateable villager.
