Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star in Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of joining the Star Wars universe, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Levy's Star Wars project is in negotiations with Gosling for the lead role. Levy has been developing this film since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's collaborating once again with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter of This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, with no information available on Gosling's character or the film's temporal setting within the Star Wars timeline. However, it's confirmed that the story will be separate from the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also suggests the film will be a standalone movie, rather than the start of a trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has significantly accelerated the project's timeline. While Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR reports that Gosling's confirmation would likely prioritize the Star Wars movie, pushing production to begin this fall.

The Star Wars franchise is currently undergoing a transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, slated for release on May 22, 2026. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.

A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending the project's progress. For a comprehensive overview of upcoming Star Wars content, consult our 2025 preview.
