Star Wars Hunters Announces Shut Down Just 9 Months After Launch, Steam Release Appears Scrapped

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 02,2025

Zynga, the publisher behind Star Wars Hunters, has announced the complete shutdown of the game just nine months after its launch, dashing any hopes for a planned PC version release on Steam. The team-based battle arena game, developed by NaturalMotion and available for free on Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android since June 2024, received a 7/10 in IGN's review. We noted that while the game's lighthearted PvP action was fun, it might not hold players' attention for long—a sentiment that now seems prophetic.

After careful consideration, Zynga revealed that the final content update for Star Wars: Hunters will roll out across all platforms on April 15, with the game remaining accessible until its final shutdown on October 1, 2025.

Zynga expressed their understanding of the disappointment this news may cause, emphasizing that the decision was not taken lightly. They acknowledged the passion and dedication of the game's community, promising transparency and updates throughout the transition process.

Here are the key dates and changes: On March 25, Season 5 will be extended by three weeks, with Zynga re-running events and shop bundles from the Season. The Ranked Season will also be extended, allowing more time for players to reach the Kyber 1 rank.

On April 15, the final content update will be released for free, and in-game purchases will be disabled across all platforms. This update will introduce the new Support Hunter, Tuya, available to all players at no cost, along with additional in-game content. Zynga will maintain a final Ranked Mode leaderboard and keep all battlefields and game modes in rotation.

The servers will officially close on October 1, marking the end of Star Wars: Hunters.

The shutdown notice does not mention the previously announced PC version, which was set to launch on Steam in early access. The game's Steam page now indicates that it is "no longer available on the Steam store."

Zynga, a subsidiary of Take-Two and known for mobile titles like FarmVille, Words with Friends, and CSR Racing, ventured into console gaming with Star Wars: Hunters. The game was also intended to be Zynga's first foray into PC gaming, as highlighted by Yaron Leyvan, executive vice president of games at Zynga, who stated in November, "The success of Star Wars: Hunters on mobile and Nintendo Switch devices has led to our decision to expand the game to PC... This moment also marks a milestone for Zynga as we bring one of our games to PC for the first time."

Despite the closure of Star Wars: Hunters, fans can look forward to other upcoming Star Wars video games, including Respawn Entertainment's third Star Wars Jedi game and Bit Reactor's turn-based tactics game, set to be revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2025.
