1047 Games, the creators of the popular Splitgate, has unveiled its highly anticipated sequel. Dive into the Sol Splitgate League and discover what's new.
On July 18th, 1047 Games released a cinematic trailer announcing Splitgate 2, the successor to the free-to-play phenomenon that captivated gamers in 2019.
CEO Ian Proulx stated their ambition to create "a game built to endure for a decade or more." While the original drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the team recognized the need for "modern tools to craft a deeply engaging and rewarding gameplay loop."
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, elaborated, stating that they "reimagined the portal mechanics, aiming for a system where skilled players could truly excel, without requiring constant portal usage for success."
While specific gameplay details remain under wraps, the developers confirmed that Splitgate 2 utilizes Unreal Engine 5, will be free-to-play, and introduces a "faction system." Despite familiar elements, the developers promise a "completely fresh" experience compared to the original.
Splitgate 2 is slated for a 2025 release on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Known as the "Halo meets Portal" shooter, Splitgate is a PvP arena FPS where players strategically utilize wormholes to navigate the map.
The original game's popularity surged after the release of a demo, garnering 600,000 downloads within a month. Its initial success led to server upgrades to handle the massive player base.
Following an extended early access period, Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022. The studio subsequently announced the cessation of updates for the original to focus on "building the game fans deserve," hinting at "revolutionary, not evolutionary" changes in a new title within the Splitgate universe.
The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and introduced three distinct factions, promising to "deepen the gameplay experience."
According to the Steam page, each faction offers a unique playstyle. Aeros players can "dash across the battlefield," while Meridian offers "tactical time manipulation," and Sabrask provides "brute force combat."
While the impact of these factions remains to be seen, the developers confirmed Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter in the style of Overwatch or Valorant.
Gameplay details will be revealed at Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), but the trailer has already generated significant excitement.
While most gameplay specifics are confidential, the developers assured fans that the trailer accurately represents the Splitgate 2 experience, confirming the authenticity of the maps, weapons, portal effects, and the return of dual-wielding.
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will allow players to delve into the lore through comics, collect character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
