Sonic 3 Surpasses All but Super Mario Bros. in North American Box Office

Author:Kristen Update:May 27,2025

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has raced past another significant milestone, becoming the second highest-grossing video game movie adaptation in North America. With Keanu Reeves joining the cast as Shadow the Hedgehog, the film has now surpassed $204 million at the domestic box office after earning $11 million in its fourth weekend across 3,582 locations. Globally, the movie has amassed an impressive total of $384.8 million.

The latest Sonic installment has outrun its predecessor, Sonic 2, in the domestic market, but it remains far behind the top-earning video game adaptation, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Mario film set a record with $574,934,330 domestically and a staggering $1,359,146,628 worldwide—figures that may prove unbeatable for future video game adaptations. However, upcoming releases like the Minecraft movie and the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel might come close.

Despite not reaching the top spot, the success of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is a major win for Paramount, which has already greenlit Sonic 4.

For those interested in other successful video game movie adaptations, 2022's Uncharted ranks fourth with $148,648,820 domestically, while the original Sonic movie holds the fifth position with $146,066,470.
