The Sims turns 25 with updates in FreePlay, livestreams and more

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 19,2025

The Sims franchise turns 25 this year, sparking a wave of celebrations across its many iterations! Dozens of titles, including mobile versions, are receiving updates to mark this milestone. The Sims FreePlay, for example, is throwing it back to the year 2000 with its exciting "FreePlay 2000" update, featuring Y2K-themed content.

When considering gaming's landmark franchises, names like Doom, Wolfenstein, The Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Super Mario, and Tetris often come to mind. However, Maxis' groundbreaking creation, The Sims, deserves equal recognition. This influential series, initially conceived as a SimCity spin-off, revolutionized gaming by offering unprecedented control over the lives of simulated individuals. Players guide their Sims through life's milestones—growing up, attending school, marrying, working, raising families, and eventually facing life's inevitable end.

The enduring popularity of The Sims across its various iterations is a testament to its impact. It not only established a new genre but continues to thrive today. In fact, our company even launched a dedicated website for The Sims news! It's no surprise that EA is celebrating this 25th anniversary with major events across all platforms, from The Sims 4 to The Sims FreePlay.
