PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)

The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last.

The scarcity stems partly from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020, the first Sony console without a built-in disc drive, and its continuation with the disc-less PS5 Pro in 2024. Both the PS5 Pro and the Slim models offer modularity, allowing users to add a disc drive separately. This has led to significant demand, particularly in the US, where the official Sony attachment has been consistently out of stock for an extended period.

While some retailers have restocked, the situation remains volatile. As of January 15th, Amazon US and PlayStation Direct are selling the drive for its MSRP of $79.99. A third-party seller on Walmart was also found offering the drive, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with extremely limited stock.

Where to Buy a PS5 Disc Drive (Currently):

Store Price
Amazon $79.99
PlayStation Direct $79.99
Walmart (Reseller) $122

PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits:

PlayStation Direct limits PS5 disc drive purchases to one per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.

The ongoing shortage, also affecting the UK since late 2024, is likely linked to the November 7th launch of the PS5 Pro. Unlike the standard PS5, the Pro model doesn't offer a disc drive option, forcing users who want both the Pro's enhanced performance and physical media playback to purchase the drive separately.

With major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy still showing the disc drive as out of stock, the shortage is far from resolved. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
