Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: a live-action Power Rangers series is reportedly in the works for Disney+. According to The Wrap, the showrunners behind the successful Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are in discussions to helm this new project. They are set to write, showrun, and produce the series in collaboration with 20th Century TV, aiming to bring a fresh take on the beloved characters.

Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers franchise, is keen on revitalizing the series to captivate a new audience while retaining its existing fanbase. The goal is to reimagine the franchise for today's viewers, ensuring it resonates with both new and long-time fans.

For many, The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers defined a generation. The '90s TV show was a staple for kids, enthralled by the adventures of teenage superheroes and their impressive mechs that could combine into even more powerful forms.

In 2018, Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers franchise from Saban Properties in a significant $522 million deal. At the time of the acquisition, Hasbro's chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, highlighted the brand's "tremendous upside potential." He expressed enthusiasm about expanding Power Rangers across various platforms, including toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, and entertainment, as well as broadening its reach globally.

This acquisition followed the less-than-stellar performance of the 2017 Power Rangers movie reboot, which attempted a darker, grittier approach. Despite hopes for a series of sequels, the film's poor box office results led to the cancellation of those plans, prompting Saban to sell the rights to Hasbro.

Hasbro is not stopping at Power Rangers. They are also developing other ambitious projects, such as a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms for Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series also in development at Netflix, and a cinematic universe based on Magic: The Gathering. These initiatives showcase Hasbro's commitment to expanding its iconic brands across various media platforms.
