The Pokémon Company is responding to unexpectedly high demand for its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, by increasing production. Initial release saw significant shortages, particularly impacting smaller US retailers.

Addressing the Shortage

As reported by IGN on January 16, 2025, the Pokémon Company acknowledged the difficulties some fans faced acquiring Prismatic Evolutions products due to overwhelming demand. They confirmed they are working at maximum capacity to produce more cards to meet this demand.

While fans may experience delays, the company's commitment to replenishing stock is reassuring.

Impact on Retailers

PokeBeach, a Pokémon TCG fan website, reported on January 4, 2025, that US retailers faced severe shortages due to the unexpected surge in demand. Player 1 Services owner, Deguire, noted that many stores, even those not typically stocking Pokémon cards, placed orders, leading distributors to limit supplies to 10-15% for smaller retailers. This resulted in larger chains like GameStop and Target receiving a disproportionate share of the stock.

The scarcity has already driven up prices on the secondary market. For example, the Elite Trainer Box, yet to be officially released, is selling for $127 USD, significantly above its $55 retail price. However, this price inflation is expected to subside once supply increases.

Expansion Details and Release Schedule

Announced on November 1, 2024, and launched January 17, 2025, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions features Tera Pokémon ex, new special illustration rare cards, and ultra rare Supporter cards. The expansion also includes reprints of popular cards with new artwork.

Additional products, including a Surprise Box, Mini Tin, Booster Bundle, and Pouch Special Collection, will be released throughout 2025. Players can also experience the set digitally via Pokémon TCG Live, available on January 16, 2025.
