Sony addressed the near-day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no further explanation of the root cause or preventative measures.
As a gesture of goodwill, PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a five-day extension to their subscriptions, automatically applied to their accounts.
The outage significantly impacted gameplay, with over one-third of players unable to log in and widespread reports of server crashes.
Sony's requirement of a PSN account, even for single-player PC games, has drawn criticism, and this outage highlights those concerns.
While less severe than the major data breach of April 2011 (which resulted in over 20 days of connectivity issues), the recent PSN downtime and Sony's limited communication have left PS5 users feeling frustrated.
