The disappointing performance of the TV adaptation of Halo hasn't deterred Microsoft from exploring further adaptations of its video games. According to Microsoft's gaming chief, Phil Spencer, fans can anticipate more projects in the future. Spencer shared these insights with Variety ahead of the release of "A Minecraft Movie," a film adaptation of the popular Microsoft-owned game, Minecraft, starring Jack Black. With high expectations, a successful movie could lead to sequels.
Microsoft's venture into adapting video games into movies and TV shows continues with the highly successful "Fallout" series on Prime Video, which is set to return for a second season. However, the adaptation of Microsoft's flagship Xbox game, Halo, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception.
Despite the setback with Halo, Spencer told Variety that Microsoft is learning and gaining confidence in this arena. He emphasized that each project provides valuable lessons, stating, "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more."
Spencer further elaborated, "We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves. And obviously we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, ‘You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.’"
Looking ahead, speculation abounds on which Xbox game could be next in line for an adaptation. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for both a live-action film and an animated TV series based on "Gears of War," though progress has been slow, with only occasional mentions from MCU star Dave Bautista about wanting to portray Marcus Fenix.

Given the success of "Fallout," Prime Video might consider an adaptation of "The Elder Scrolls" or "Skyrim." However, with projects like "The Rings of Power" and "The Wheel of Time," Amazon may feel its fantasy genre is already well-represented.
Sony's "Gran Turismo" movie defied expectations and succeeded, raising the question of whether Microsoft might greenlight a "Forza Horizon" movie. As Microsoft now owns Activision Blizzard, there's potential for a "Call of Duty" movie or another attempt at a "Warcraft" adaptation. According to Jason Schreier's book, "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment," previous attempts at series for "Warcraft," "Overwatch," and "Diablo" with Netflix fell through, but Microsoft could potentially revive these projects.
On a lighter note, Microsoft's ownership of the "Crash Bandicoot" franchise could lead to a family-friendly animated movie or TV series, especially given the success of similar projects like "Mario" and "Sonic." The upcoming reboot of "Fable" in 2026 might also be ripe for an adaptation.
Lastly, there's curiosity about whether Microsoft might give "Halo" another chance with a high-budget movie.
Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, are further along in this process. Sony has enjoyed success with the "Uncharted" movie, HBO's "The Last of Us," and the upcoming second season of "Twisted Metal." Sony has also announced adaptations for "Helldivers 2," "Horizon Zero Dawn," and "Ghost of Tsushima," with the "God of War" TV show set for two seasons.
Nintendo, on the other hand, boasts the most successful video game adaptation to date with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which is set for a sequel, along with a live-action "The Legend of Zelda" adaptation in development.
