PGA Tour 2K25: The Final Preview

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 21,2025

If you polled gamers on which pro sports franchise they'd most like to see 2K revive, a resurrected NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. Even MLB and NHL might trail behind. Yet, 2K is instead teeing off for a third round with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's surprisingly enjoyable.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago before partnering with 2K. This experience shines in 2K25; I found few significant flaws. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and more real-life courses would be welcome (it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is genuinely fun. I did notice surprisingly choppy framerates on PC when surveying holes, however.

PlayThe upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, I preferred the right stick option: pull down to wind up, and push forward to strike. Difficulty settings adjust the forgiveness; higher settings penalize imprecise movements. Conversely, easier settings (Perfect Swing) provide a more relaxed experience. LB allows for shot shaping, adding control. Improved ball physics are noticeable, and the ability to adjust your tee shot position based on obstacles is a welcome addition. Starting with Tiger Woods, this year's cover athlete, certainly helped.

MyCareer receives a boost with narrative mechanics, similar to other sports games. I even got a movie offer from Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin, due to licensing). Choosing a heroic or villainous path impacts stat boosts. Gear purchased with VC also affects stats, and skills are upgradeable through gameplay. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (like achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.

PlayMyPlayer creation, while not extensively explored, offers a reasonable level of customization. Skill trees are a welcome addition. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies (clubs), promise casual fun. The inclusion of asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 is hard to definitively review; it excels without truly standing out in any one area. This makes it hard to get overly excited, but it seems like a solid choice for golf fans and those seeking a relaxed gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
