Paul Rudd Nostalgically Promotes Nintendo Switch 2, Echoing 90s SNES Ad

Author:Kristen Update:May 13,2025

Nintendo has enlisted the charming Paul Rudd to generate excitement for the Nintendo Switch 2 through a new commercial that affectionately nods to his iconic 1991 Super Nintendo ad. In the original, a youthful Rudd, sporting a long black jacket, beaded necklace, and a distinctive 90s hairstyle, strides into a drive-in movie theater with an SNES. He connects the console and entertains a growing crowd with games like *The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past*, *F-Zero*, and *Sim City*, culminating with the memorable SNES slogan, "Now you're playing with power."

He enters a living room this time, setting up the Nintendo Switch 2 to play *Mario Kart World* alongside comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, plus a child who affectionately calls him "Uncle Paul." The group utilizes the system's new GameChat feature, playfully ribbing Rudd about his 90s-inspired attire and the ad's over-the-top elements like a fog machine and fan. The commercial humorously shifts the focus from "playing with power" to "playing together," embracing the cheesiness of the original while adding a sweet, modern twist.

IGN had the opportunity to interview Rudd about reprising his role in a Nintendo hardware commercial more than three decades later. Rudd shared amusing anecdotes, including the possibility that he wore his personal beaded necklace in the original ad and how he continued playing *Mario Kart World* during breaks on set. Despite his enthusiasm, he humorously noted that he wasn't allowed to take a Nintendo Switch 2 home. You can watch the full interview here:
