Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 21,2025

Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, it's back with a completely revamped version.

Remember the unique physics-based gameplay? Absorb microorganisms, avoid being absorbed—a deceptively simple yet challenging premise. Now, for the first time in years, modern Android devices can experience this award-winning puzzler in its optimal form.

Hemisphere Games, the developer, explains in a blog post that initial Android development relied on Apportable, a now-defunct porting studio. This hindered updates, ultimately leading to Osmos' removal from the Google Play Store due to incompatibility with current Android systems (it only ran on obsolete 32-bit systems). The game's triumphant return is thanks to a completely rebuilt port.
