Nvidia's New App: FPS Drops Reported in Some Games

The recently released Nvidia app is causing frame rate (FPS) drops in specific games and on certain PC configurations. This article explores this performance issue stemming from Nvidia's latest game optimization software.

Inconsistent Framerates Across Games and Systems

Nvidia App Causes FPS Drops in Some Games and PCs Testing conducted by PC Gamer on December 18th revealed performance inconsistencies. Several users reported stuttering while using the application. An Nvidia staff member suggested a temporary workaround: disabling the "Game Filters and Photo Mode" overlay.

Initial testing with Black Myth: Wukong on a high-end system (Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RTX 4070 Super) showed a slight FPS increase (from 59fps to 63fps at 1080p Very High settings) with the overlay off. However, enabling the overlay and reducing graphics settings to Medium resulted in a substantial 12% FPS drop. Cyberpunk 2077 testing on a different high-end system (Core Ultra 9 285K and RTX 4080 Super) showed no significant difference with the overlay enabled or disabled. This suggests the problem is game and system-specific.

Following reports on Twitter (X), PC Gamer replicated the issue and tested the Nvidia staff's suggested fix. While disabling the overlay helped some, many users still experienced unstable frame rates. Some Twitter users suggested reverting to older graphics drivers, while others questioned which games were affected. Currently, Nvidia's only official response is the overlay disable recommendation.

The Nvidia App's Official Launch

Nvidia App Causes FPS Drops in Some Games and PCs Initially launched in beta on February 22, 2024, as a GeForce Experience replacement, the Nvidia app officially launched in November 2024. This coincided with a graphics driver update in preparation for new game releases. The new app boasts improved features and a redesigned overlay system, eliminating the need for account logins.

Despite these improvements, the FPS drop issue highlights the need for Nvidia to further investigate its impact on specific games and hardware configurations.
