Nintendo Announces Live-Action Zelda Movie Release Date

Nintendo has confirmed that the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie will premiere on March 26, 2027.

The announcement was made through the recently launched Nintendo Today! app, which was introduced during the Nintendo Direct March 2025 event. No further details about the film were shared.

Renowned video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the news as a final surprise during the showcase. This all-in-one mobile application offers several benefits for dedicated Nintendo fans to explore.

This central hub for Nintendo content functions as a daily calendar and news source, delivering updates directly to players as they happen. Miyamoto explained that after the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation, fans can access the Nintendo Today app for immediate updates, with fresh content expected "daily" from that point forward.

However, major news has already surfaced, with the Zelda movie release date confirmation likely to attract many users to download the app in anticipation of similar significant announcements. It's noteworthy that Nintendo chose its news app to break the Zelda movie information ahead of its official social media channels.

Nintendo and Sony Pictures initially announced their collaboration on the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie in November 2023, with Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) set to direct, and Avi Arad alongside Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto serving as producers.

Little is known about the film's specific details. Ball has expressed his vision to create a "live-action Miyazaki" experience, referencing acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, the director behind Studio Ghibli and creator of beloved anime classics including My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. Ball maintains that the Zelda adaptation will be a "serious" interpretation with a realistic atmosphere, and has clarified that he plans to minimize the use of motion capture techniques for this "grounded" production.
