Monster Hunter Wilds: Exploring the Possibility of a 15th Weapon Type

A New Weapon Type Remains a Possibility

Monster Hunter Wilds Doesn't Have New Weapons Because They're Hard to Come Up WithAfter over a decade with the same weapon roster, the Monster Hunter (MH) franchise might benefit from a fresh weapon type. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the potential addition of a new weapon.

Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapon types, unchanged since Monster Hunter 4 and the introduction of the Insect Glaive over a decade ago. While Tokuda expressed interest in a new weapon, he noted that the decision to forgo one in recent titles wasn't due to any specific obstacle. The difficulty lies in designing a weapon that doesn't overly overlap with existing ones while maintaining balance and a unique feel. He explained that the resources invested in refining existing weapons and their interactions outweigh those required for creating a completely new one.

Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter Wilds Doesn't Have New Weapons Because They're Hard to Come Up WithCapcom's commitment to innovation is evident in MH Wilds, with additions like Focus Mode and Power Clash enhancing existing weapons. While the team considered community feedback from the beta, Tokuda emphasized the importance of preserving the core feel of each weapon.

Weapon balancing across titles is a meticulous process. Tokuda explained that each title begins with a conceptual feel for each weapon, which is then tested and refined through player feedback. The challenge in MH Wilds was particularly acute due to Iceborne's expansion of existing weapon movesets and abilities. The team aimed to avoid simply carrying over elements from previous games, instead focusing on a cohesive gameplay experience for Wilds.
