Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator

Minecraft's original creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, has hinted at the possibility of a Minecraft 2 in 2025. Let's delve into the details of his recent announcements.

Notch Considers a Spiritual Successor to Minecraft

Markus Persson, in a recent X (formerly Twitter) poll, revealed he's developing a game blending roguelike elements (like ADOM) with first-person dungeon crawling (similar to Eye of the Beholder). However, he also expressed openness to creating a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft.

The poll overwhelmingly favored a Minecraft-inspired game, garnering 81.5% of over 287,000 votes. Given Minecraft's enduring popularity (45-50 million daily players), this isn't surprising.

Persson subsequently confirmed his seriousness, stating he essentially announced Minecraft 2. He believes fans desire another Minecraft-like game from him, and he's enthusiastic about pursuing this passion project. He clarified that the order of development isn't fixed, but he's committed to creating a new game and sees a spiritual successor as a viable option.

It's crucial to remember that Microsoft owns the Minecraft IP and Mojang Studios since 2014. Therefore, Persson can't directly utilize the Minecraft IP without Microsoft's involvement. He assures fans that any spiritual successor would avoid infringing on Mojang's and Microsoft's work, expressing respect for their contributions.

Persson acknowledges the inherent risks in creating spiritual successors, admitting concerns about potential deviations from expectations. However, he's motivated by the strong fan interest and potential financial success.

While awaiting this potential "sequel," fans can anticipate Minecraft-themed amusement parks launching in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, along with the release of the Minecraft live-action movie later in 2025.
