"Magic: The Gathering Universe Goes Cinematic"

Hasbro has unveiled plans to expand the Magic: The Gathering universe beyond the tabletop, aiming to bring the iconic franchise to both the big and small screens.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro is partnering with Legendary Entertainment to develop a shared cinematic universe based on Magic: The Gathering. This ambitious project will include both feature films and television series, with the film serving as the initial focus.

“We pride ourselves on being thoughtful stewards of unique and cherished intellectual properties, and no franchise embodies that more than Magic: The Gathering,” said Mary Parent, Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production. Legendary, known for blockbuster hits such as Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Detective Pikachu, is now setting its sights on one of the most influential fantasy brands in gaming history.

It remains unclear whether this new live-action universe will connect with the previously announced Magic: The Gathering animated series set to debut on Netflix. While early reports suggested separate development, this latest news hints at the possibility of an expanded, unified Magic universe taking shape across multiple formats and studios.

Originally created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, Magic: The Gathering has evolved into one of the world’s most successful and enduring trading card games. Since acquiring Wizards of the Coast in 1999, Hasbro has continued to grow the brand, solidifying its place in global pop culture.

This isn’t Hasbro’s first venture into film adaptations of its brands. The company has already brought franchises like G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons & Dragons to the screen, with several new projects currently in development—including upcoming G.I. Joe films, a fresh Power Rangers movie, and even a Beyblade feature. With this new collaboration, Magic: The Gathering joins that growing list of properties being transformed for global audiences.
