Blumhouse, a leading horror studio, marks its 15th anniversary by re-releasing the 2022 blockbuster M3GAN in theaters, setting the stage for its upcoming sequel. This limited run introduces innovative features, including smartphone integration, sparking debate among moviegoers.

As part of Shudder’s Halfway to Halloween event, M3GAN, alongside Ma and Annabelle, will screen for one-night-only events featuring Meta’s “Movie Mate” technology. This allows audiences to engage with M3GAN via a chatbot and access real-time exclusive content through second-screen functionality.

“Movie Mate is exclusive to theater audiences and activates by messaging the @M3GAN Instagram account to begin the experience,” the studio shared in a Variety report.

“This feature harnesses Meta’s technology to enhance the second-screen experience, building anticipation for M3GAN 2.0, set for release on June 27.”

The studio also teased “sneak peeks, exclusive messages from filmmakers and stars, and surprise appearances in select locations.” While this bold move aims to redefine the theatrical experience, it risks alienating traditionalists. Only time will reveal how audiences embrace this shift, but hopes remain that it won’t become a staple of standard screenings.

M3GAN will screen nationwide on April 30, followed by Annabelle on May 7 and Ma on May 14. M3GAN 2.0 arrives in U.S. theaters on June 27.
