Larian Studios Shifts Focus to New Game, Enforces Media Blackout

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 29,2025

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced a significant shift in focus towards their next project, implementing a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. Despite the upcoming release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 later this year, the studio’s full attention is now directed towards crafting a new, unannounced title.

Swen Vincke, the head of Larian, recently took to social media to reminisce about the studio's journey, acknowledging the tremendous success of Baldur’s Gate 3. In a tweet, Vincke hinted at future endeavors, stating, "But the story ain't over yet," and encouraged fans to stay tuned. His message reflected a sense of nostalgia and anticipation for what's to come.

Got me all nostalgic - it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind. https://t.co/eLSTv3CXb4

In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that their entire team's focus is on developing their next game, signaling a complete media blackout. This new project is not a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 nor another Dungeons & Dragons title. Instead, it represents a fresh start, as Larian had previously struggled to generate internal enthusiasm for a follow-up to Baldur’s Gate.

Back in November 2023, Vincke hinted at the studio's next big game, expressing excitement and a desire to push boundaries beyond what they achieved with Baldur’s Gate 3. Although details remain scarce, Vincke's enthusiasm suggests that this new project will be ambitious and innovative.

Additionally, in July 2023, Vincke mentioned to IGN that a sequel to Larian’s Divinity: Original Sin series is in the works, although fans should not expect it imminently. He emphasized the need for a creative break after the intense development of Baldur’s Gate 3, which involved 400 developers pouring their hearts and souls into the project.

While Divinity isn't the immediate next step, speculation abounds about what Larian's new game might entail. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, could they venture into science fiction, a modern-day setting, or perhaps even a new genre altogether? Only time will tell, as fans may have to wait years to discover what Larian has in store.
