HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety suggests Lithgow is nearing a deal to secure the coveted role. This follows earlier reports naming Mark Rylance as a top contender for the part.

"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "We'll only confirm casting details once contracts are finalized."

Lithgow's extensive filmography includes notable performances in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, among numerous other credits.

Despite ongoing casting rumors, HBO remains discreet about its progress. The search continues for actors to fill the roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, while Paapa Essiedu is reportedly attached to play Severus Snape.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This is perhaps unsurprising, given J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful retelling of the books, aiming for a richer narrative than the film series allowed. Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (also a Game of Thrones alumnus) are attached to direct and write.
