The passing of beloved *Harry Potter* actors leaves a void in the hearts of fans worldwide. For many, these performers were integral to their childhoods, making their deaths particularly poignant. To honor their memory, let's remember all the members of the *Harry Potter* cast who have passed away.
With the first *Harry Potter* film released in 2001, over two decades have passed since the original cast transported us to Hogwarts and the magical world it inhabits. Sadly, this also means we've had to bid farewell to many of the talented individuals who helped bring this beloved world to life.
Robert Knox played Marcus Belby, a member of Slughorn's Slug Club, in The Half-Blood Prince. Tragically, he died in 2008 at the young age of 18, following a stabbing. His role was not recast.
Timothy Bateson voiced Kreacher, the Black family house-elf, in The Order of the Phoenix. He passed away in 2009 at age 83. Simon McBurney took over the voice role for the remaining films.
Alfred Burke played the former Hogwarts Headmaster, Armando Dippet, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He died in 2011 at the age of 92.
Peter Cartwright portrayed Elphias Doge in The Order of the Phoenix. He passed away in 2013 at age 78, leading to the role being recast for subsequent films.
Derek Deadman played Tom, the landlord of the Leaky Cauldron, in the first film. He passed away from complications of diabetes in 2014, and the role was recast for later films.
David Ryall took over the role of Elphias Doge for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He died in 2014 at age 79.
Terence Bayler, who played the silent but menacing Bloody Baron, passed away in 2016 at age 86.
Sir John Hurt, the acclaimed actor who played Ollivander the wandmaker, died of pancreatic cancer in early 2017, shortly after his 77th birthday.
Sam Beazley, who portrayed the portrait of Professor Everard in The Order of the Phoenix, passed away in 2017 at the age of 101.
Verne Troyer played Griphook the goblin in The Philosopher’s Stone (though Warwick Davis provided the voice). Troyer passed away in 2018 from complications of alcohol intoxication, later ruled a suicide.
Paul Ritter, who played the minor character Eldred Worple in The Half-Blood Prince, passed away from a brain tumor in 2021 at age 54.
Leslie Phillips, the voice of the Sorting Hat, passed away in 2022 at age 98.
Sir Michael Gambon, who took over the role of Dumbledore from Prisoner of Azkaban onwards, passed away from pneumonia in 2023 at age 82.
Simon Fisher-Becker, who appeared as the Fat Friar in The Philosopher's Stone, passed away in March 2025 at the age of 63.
This list sadly reflects the loss of talented individuals who contributed to the magic of the *Harry Potter* films. Their contributions will be remembered.
The *Harry Potter* movies are currently streaming on Peacock.
