Guitar Hero is coming to mobile, and stumbles out the block with AI announcement

Guitar Hero Mobile: A Rocky Start for a Legendary Franchise

The rhythm game genre may not have exploded in the West, but Guitar Hero was a monumental exception. Its return, this time on mobile, should be cause for celebration. However, Activision’s announcement stumbled badly, opting for an awkwardly AI-generated image on Instagram instead of a proper trailer or press release. This immediately overshadowed the news, particularly given Activision’s recent controversy surrounding AI art in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Details about Guitar Hero Mobile remain scarce. While the franchise had a previous mobile iteration nearly two decades ago (see image below), expectations are high for a modern, impressive update.

A Sour Note: The AI Art Controversy

The AI-generated artwork used for the announcement has been widely criticized for its poor quality, raising questions about the development process. This negative reception, coupled with strong competition from games like Space Ape’s BeatStar, casts a shadow over the potential success of Guitar Hero Mobile.

Despite the excitement surrounding a Guitar Hero mobile revival and its potential, Activision's misstep with the announcement is undeniable. The initial impression is far from positive.
