When you start a new character in Stardew Valley, you have the opportunity to adopt either a cat or a dog to live on your farm as a pet. Initially, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update released in early 2024 opened the door to adopting multiple pets.

To welcome more pets to your farm, you'll need to meet certain progress-related requirements. First and foremost, you must maximize your friendship level with your current pet. Ensure you provide your pet with a full bowl of water daily using your Watering Can, except on rainy and snowy days when the bowl fills automatically.

Additionally, pet them once a day to see a heart bubble appear over their head, indicating you've interacted with them. You can monitor your pet's friendship meter in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.

Once their friendship meter is completely filled, you'll receive a notice from Marnie in the mail about the opportunity to adopt more pets available at her shop south of your farm. If you've somehow avoided adopting your first pet throughout your first year, Marnie will send the notice at the start of Year 2.

At the counter, speak to Marnie and select the "Adopt Pets" option from the menu. You'll be presented with a list of 12 available Pet Licenses, including five variations of dogs and cats, as well as two types of turtles. Be prepared to pay a moderate sum for each license.

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley

After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern area of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each new pet. These bowls not only provide water but also serve as their "home," preventing your friendship meter from decreasing. Neglecting the bowls for too long can lead to your pets running away, resulting in a loss of both companionship and money.

Pet Bowls are available under Robin's "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood (obtained with a Copper Axe or better). It's advisable to build these before adopting your new pets to ensure you don't lose friendship points.

You can also purchase optional decorative items for your pets at Marnie's Ranch, such as Doghouses (outdoor) and Cat Trees (indoor). These items, while charming, do not affect your pets' friendship meters.

That wraps up how to get multiple pets in Stardew Valley. For more news and guides related to the game, including all Stardew Valley farm types and how to pick the best one, be sure to visit The Escapist.
