Rockstar Games has announced an official release date for GTA 6, but with an unexpected delay pushing it to 2026. Here's what this decision means and how it impacts other upcoming game releases.
Grand Theft Auto VI has maintained its position as one of gaming's most anticipated titles since its initial trailer reveal. After prolonged silence, Rockstar Games has confirmed a release date that diverges from fan expectations.
On May 2, Rockstar announced via X (formerly Twitter) that GTA 6 will launch on May 26, 2026 - a surprising delay from Take-Two Interactive's previously suggested Fall 2025 timeframe mentioned in their Q3 2025 earnings call.
The developer apologized for the postponement, stating: "We appreciate your patience as we take this additional time to meet the quality standards our fans deserve." Further details about the game will be revealed in upcoming announcements.

Take-Two Interactive fully endorsed Rockstar's development timeline adjustment. In an official statement published May 2, CEO Strauss Zelnick explained the rationale behind supporting the delay.
"We fully support Rockstar's decision to extend development for Grand Theft Auto VI," Zelnick stated. "This ensures the final product will deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience that surpasses player expectations."

This strategic shift aligns with their recent statements about release scheduling. Last week's announcement of Borderlands 4 moving its launch forward by two weeks initially appeared related to GTA 6's scheduling, though Gearbox Entertainment denied any connection between the two releases.
Take-Two reiterated their commitment to quality: "Our exceptional pipeline of titles positions us for sustained growth and increased shareholder value in the coming years."

In a bold countermove to GTA 6's delay, Devolver Digital announced they're maintaining their commitment to release a game simultaneously with Rockstar's flagship title. On May 2, the publisher confirmed via X their intention to launch on May 26 with the defiant statement: "You can't escape us."
Since March, Devolver has teased this strategic release alignment without specifying which title from their catalog - which includes possible follow-ups to Cult of the Lamb, Enter the Gungeon, or Hotline Miami - will square off against the gaming giant.

Meanwhile, numerous other developers have reportedly chosen to avoid head-to-head competition with GTA 6. Anonymous industry executives confirmed to The Game Business Show in March that many are considering delaying their releases to steer clear of Rockstar's blockbuster.
Despite the delayed arrival, anticipation remains high for Rockstar's next-generation open-world adventure. Grand Theft Auto VI is now scheduled for release on May 26, 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. For ongoing coverage and updates, explore our additional articles below.
