Galactus Returns in Fantastic Four: First Steps, Signaling Major Marvel Developments

Author:Kristen Update:May 22,2025

Face front, True Believers! The first trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps has finally landed, giving us our initial glimpse at Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach stepping into the roles of Marvel's First Family. We also get a peek at their robotic sidekick, HERBIE, and a taste of the film's retro-futuristic aesthetic. This trailer sets a unique tone, distinct from other MCU projects, and we're all buzzing with excitement for its July 25, 2025 release. But the character who truly captures our attention is none other than Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds.

Where Is Doctor Doom In the Fantastic Four: First Steps Trailer?

While Doctor Doom might be a no-show in the trailer, Galactus looms large, promising to be closer to his comic book roots than ever before. Let's dive into why The Fantastic Four: First Steps appears to be the film that will finally give this iconic Marvel villain the respect he deserves.

Who Is The Devourer of Worlds? Galactus Explained

For those unfamiliar with this cosmic entity, Galactus was first brought to life by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four #48. Originally named Galan, he was the sole survivor of the universe that existed before our own, merging with its sentience during the Big Bang to become the first being of the new cosmos. As Galactus, he roams the universe, consuming planets to sustain his life force. He employs heralds, like the renowned Silver Surfer, to scout out suitable worlds.

In their first clash with Galactus, the Fantastic Four were tipped off by the Watcher, who broke his vow of non-interference to save Earth. Despite their efforts against the Silver Surfer, the planet's fate hung in the balance until the Human Torch ventured into Galactus' ship, Taa II, to retrieve the Ultimate Nullifier. When Mr. Fantastic threatened Galactus with this weapon, the cosmic giant agreed to spare Earth in exchange for the Nullifier's return. Galactus then exiled the Silver Surfer to Earth for his betrayal.

Since then, Galactus has remained a pivotal figure in the Marvel Universe, engaging the Fantastic Four in numerous confrontations and clashing with other heroes like Thor. Although not traditionally evil, his need to consume planets places him in a morally grey area. Despite his cool factor, his big-screen portrayal has left much to be desired—until now.

The Second Coming of Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Galactus has graced various cartoons and video games, such as the '90s Fantastic Four series and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. His only previous cinematic appearance was in Tim Story's 2007 film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which disappointed fans with a reimagined Galactus as an indistinct cloud, devoid of his iconic purple armor and helmet.

However, The Fantastic Four: First Steps seems set to right this wrong. The trailer and a drone light show at last year's San Diego Comic-Con hint at a design that hews closely to Jack Kirby's original vision. Marvel Studios' decision to feature Galactus as the villain in their Fantastic Four reboot reflects an understanding of fan disappointment with previous adaptations and a commitment to getting it right this time. With Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom reserved for future Avengers films, the focus can be squarely on delivering a stellar MCU debut for Galactus.

This is crucial, especially given the MCU's recent challenges with the Multiverse Saga. As the franchise has cycled through numerous villains, Galactus stands out as one of the few with the gravitas to rejuvenate the MCU. A successful adaptation could bolster the franchise's standing and generate anticipation for the upcoming Avengers films, in which the Fantastic Four are poised to play significant roles.

During the period when the Fantastic Four were sidelined due to the Fox-Marvel film rights dispute, fans expressed more interest in seeing their villains, including Doctor Doom, Annihilus, and Galactus, in the MCU. Now, with the Fantastic Four back in the spotlight (and Ryan North's current comic run being a must-read), characters like Galactus could be the key to revitalizing the MCU post-Multiverse Saga.

Galactus is one of the most compelling characters associated with the Fantastic Four, and it's high time he receives a fitting live-action portrayal. We'll see how Marvel's take on Galactus and the FF unfolds this July, but judging by the trailer, their first steps are headed in the right direction.
