Fable Delayed: Microsoft Unveils Pre-Alpha Gameplay

Microsoft has delayed the release of Fable from 2025 to 2026, but offered a first glimpse of exciting new gameplay footage to soften the blow. This highly anticipated reboot of the beloved Xbox franchise, originally developed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, is being crafted by Playground Games, the acclaimed studio behind the Forza Horizon series.

In a recent Xbox Podcast episode, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, reassured fans that the delay is worthwhile. He emphasized his confidence in Playground Games, highlighting their track record of creating critically acclaimed, visually stunning, and incredibly fun games like Forza Horizon. He described the new Fable as a beautiful and innovative take on the franchise, promising a breathtakingly realized Albion and incorporating Playground's signature style, including British humor. The delay, he explained, is to ensure the best possible game for players.

A 50-second pre-alpha gameplay video accompanied the announcement. This brief but impactful clip showcased various aspects of Fable's gameplay, including combat using a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, a two-handed sword, and even a fireball spell. The video also featured city exploration, horseback riding through a fantastical forest, and, of course, the iconic Fable tradition of kicking a chicken. The visuals were striking, aligning with Duncan's description of a beautifully realized Albion. A particularly memorable scene depicted the protagonist setting a trap using sausages to lure a werewolf-like creature into a fight.

Originally announced in 2020 as a "new beginning," Fable's development has been steadily progressing. Previous reveals at the 2023 Xbox Game Showcase and the June 2024 Xbox Showcase provided glimpses into the game's world and style. This reboot marks the first mainline Fable game since 2010's Fable 3 and remains one of Xbox Game Studios' most anticipated upcoming titles.
