Disney's Snow White Remake Struggles to Break Even After Weak Box Office Start

Author:Kristen Update:May 20,2025

Snow White, the latest live-action remake from Disney directed by Marc Webb, known for The Amazing Spider-Man films, had a challenging start at the box office. According to Comscore, the film grossed $43 million domestically during its opening weekend, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2025 so far, only behind Captain America: Brave New World. Despite topping the weekly chart, Snow White fell short of the opening weekend earnings of other Disney remakes such as Dumbo, which debuted at $45 million in 2019, and significantly below the $100 million+ openings of The Lion King (2019), Beauty and the Beast (2017), The Jungle Book (2016), and The Little Mermaid (2023).

Internationally, Snow White's performance was similarly subdued, with an opening weekend haul of $44.3 million, bringing the global total to $87.3 million. This figure is concerning given the film's reported production budget of over $250 million, not including marketing expenses, setting a steep challenge for the film to break even.

The movie, which reimagines Disney’s 1937 animated classic, stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Despite the initial box office struggles, there's hope for Snow White, drawing inspiration from the success of Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to Disney's The Lion King remake. Mufasa opened to a modest $35.4 million domestically but ultimately earned over $717 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, Disney faces ongoing scrutiny over the performance of Captain America: Brave New World, which has accumulated $400.8 million globally after six weekends, split between $192.1 million domestically and $208.7 million internationally.

IGN’s review of Snow White awarded it a 7/10, praising it for meaningfully adapting its original source material rather than merely replicating it.
