Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nears Completion, but Release Remains Distant

Toby Fox, creator of Undertale and Deltarune, recently shared a development update in his newsletter. While Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 are planned for simultaneous release on PC, Switch, and PS4, the release date is still some time away, despite Chapter 4 nearing completion.

Chapter 4 is currently in the polishing phase. All maps are finished, battles are playable, but minor adjustments remain. Fox noted needing small improvements to two cutscenes, balance and visual enhancements for one battle, a better background for another, and improved ending sequences for two more. Despite this, he considers Chapter 4 essentially playable, and it's received positive feedback from testers.

The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges. Fox highlighted the increased effort required for a paid release compared to the free Chapters 1 and 2, emphasizing the need for perfection. Before launch, the team must complete several key tasks:

• Testing new functions
• Finalizing PC and console versions
• Japanese localization
• Extensive bug testing

Chapter 3 development is complete (per Fox's February newsletter). While fine-tuning Chapter 4, some team members are already beginning preliminary work on Chapter 5.

The newsletter offered glimpses of upcoming content: Ralsei and Rouxls dialogue, Elnina's character description, and a new item, GingerGuard. While the three-year wait since Chapter 2 has been frustrating for fans, Fox assures them that Chapters 3 and 4 combined will exceed the length of Chapters 1 and 2. He anticipates a smoother release schedule for future chapters following the launch of Chapters 3 and 4. A specific release date remains unannounced.
