David Fincher and Brad Pitt's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" Sequel in Development for Netflix

David Fincher and Brad Pitt are set to collaborate once again, this time to bring to life a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. According to The Playlist, the film is slated for Netflix, further solidifying Fincher's ongoing relationship with the streaming platform. If all goes as planned, this untitled sequel will see Brad Pitt reprising his role as the stunt double, Cliff Booth.

The journey of this script to Fincher's hands is quite intriguing. Originally, the script was an evolved version of Tarantino's The Movie Critic, which was intended to be his final film before it was abruptly shelved last year. Tarantino, not willing to let the concept die, entrusted the screenplay to Fincher, who is now set to direct.

Reports from The Playlist indicate that Netflix has acquired the screenplay for $20 million, with a projected budget of $200 million. Filming is expected to commence in California in July, just three months away. While no additional casting has been confirmed, it's noted that Leonardo DiCaprio will not be returning as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt are prioritizing this project, setting aside other commitments.

Deadline has confirmed these developments, noting that Pitt received Tarantino's approval to pitch the script to Fincher, leading to this unexpected collaboration.

14 ImagesOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood, released in 2019, is widely regarded as a masterpiece in Tarantino's oeuvre. The upcoming sequel, potentially known as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2, has high expectations to meet, especially following the original's definitive and impactful ending. However, the universe of the film has been further explored in other mediums.

In 2021, Tarantino released a novelization of the film, which delves deeper into the 1960s California setting and sheds light on Cliff Booth's backstory, including whether he indeed killed his wife—a question left ambiguous in the film. This novelization will likely gain additional significance once the sequel is released, though its exact role in the new film remains to be seen.
