Cyberpunk 2077 Takes 25% of Switch 2's 64GB

CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will require 64GB of storage on the Nintendo Switch 2. While this is notably smaller than the 100–110GB needed on Xbox or PlayStation 5, it still occupies a substantial 25% of the Switch 2’s confirmed 256GB internal storage.

Releasing on June 5, the same day as the Switch 2, Cyberpunk 2077 will be sold as a physical 64GB game card and as a digital download via the Nintendo eShop.

Nintendo also recently clarified that some new Switch 2 game cards will not contain the actual game data, instead providing a code to download the title. Cyberpunk 2077, however, will ship as a full game card.

This leads to an important question: how fast will the Switch 2’s internal storage reach its limit?

The Switch 2’s 256GB internal storage marks a major increase over the original Switch’s 32GB. Still, early indications point to Switch 2 games being considerably larger in file size.

As noted, Cyberpunk 2077 requires 64GB. Compare that to one of the largest titles on the original Switch, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which came in at only 16GB. Upcoming Switch 2 releases, such as the $80 Mario Kart World, are also expected to require substantially more space.

The clear alternative? Expandable storage. Like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox, the Switch family supports it. However, while the original Switch worked with standard microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards, the Switch 2 only accepts microSD Express. That means older microSD cards are incompatible, and gamers will need to invest in new—and more expensive—memory cards.

IGN’s deals team has already identified the best prices on microSD Express cards compatible with the Switch 2. Options include 128GB ($44.99), 256GB ($59.99), 512GB ($99.99), and 1TB ($199.99) models from SanDisk and Lexar. However, some of these are selling quickly and are already listed as temporarily out of stock on Amazon.

Nintendo is collaborating with SanDisk and Samsung to release officially branded memory cards. Based on past releases, these are expected to carry a higher price than equivalent third-party cards. It’s also possible that more manufacturers will enter the microSD Express market now that the Switch 2 is boosting demand—though it’s uncertain whether this will lead to more affordable prices.
