Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making a splash in the virtual reality (VR) world with its upcoming release on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into VR and mixed reality (MR) gaming, offering a unique and immersive strategic experience.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Comments

2K Games and Firaxis Games announced the exciting news at the Civ World Summit Event on February 8th, 2025. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for this new era of strategy gaming. Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the strong momentum in mixed reality gaming, emphasizing Civ VII VR's appeal to dedicated strategy enthusiasts. While Civ VII is launching on various platforms including PlayStation consoles, the VR version will be exclusive to Meta's Quest headsets.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR transports players to a detailed command table, allowing them to interact with the game world from various perspectives, mimicking a tabletop experience. Players can seamlessly switch between immersive VR and MR modes, adapting to their preferred playstyle and environment. The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes for up to four players using Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games acknowledged player feedback from the early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is actively addressing concerns, particularly regarding the User Interface (UI), aiming for more intuitive interactions and improved map readability. Future updates will include community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer and expanded map variety. A quality-of-life update in March is planned, focusing on UI improvements, AI balancing, diplomacy adjustments, and bug fixes.
