According to Cineverse, which has secured the rights for the third Silent Hill film in the U.S., set to release later this year, Return to Silent Hill is poised to be a "faithful adaptation" of the iconic Silent Hill 2's narrative.

“Silent Hill is one of the premier video game franchises, and Christophe Gans has brilliantly recaptured the essence of the games with Return to Silent Hill,” said Brandon Hill, Cineverse's executive director of acquisitions, in an interview with Variety.

Director Christophe Gans expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, “I am thrilled to work with Cineverse, a company that truly understands the passion of the fanbase. Return to Silent Hill is crafted with profound respect for Konami’s masterpiece, Silent Hill 2. My hope is that fans will find the film both enjoyable and fulfilling.”

PlayThe storyline of the film will resonate deeply with those familiar with the original Silent Hill 2 or the 2024 Bloober remake. It centers on "James (Jeremy Irvine), a man shattered by separation from his true love (Hannah Emily Anderson). A mysterious letter beckons him back to Silent Hill in search of her, only to discover the town transformed by a sinister force" and populated with "terrifying figures, both familiar and new." The project was announced in October 2022, and it wasn't until May 2024 that we caught our first look at Return to Silent Hill's interpretation of Red Pyramid Thing — also known as Pyramid Head.

Christophe Gans' initial foray into the Silent Hill universe, loosely based on the first game, follows the journey of Rose as she seeks her missing daughter, Sharon, in a town where summer brings snow. Despite the involvement of Oscar-winning screenwriter Roger Avary, who penned Pulp Fiction, our review rated Gans' first adaptation a mediocre 5/10, stating: "Our worst fears are realized yet again. The video game-to-film genre has struggled with mediocrity for over a decade. Silent Hill is perhaps the most intelligent and visually striking video game adaptation to date, yet it falls short in delivering entertainment, making it a tedious watch."

Silent Hill 2 (2024) Review Screens

Bassett and loosely based on Silent Hill 3, received a less favorable rating of 4.5 in our review: "Silent Hill Revelation 3D is a disappointing sequel in every aspect, failing to captivate or frighten, and potentially sounding the death knell for the franchise."

Cineverse has announced that Return to Silent Hill will enjoy a "wide theatrical release in America" later this year, promising fans an eagerly anticipated cinematic experience.
