New Haunted Comic Exhibition in Catacomb of Torment

Author:Kristen Update:Oct 20,2025

Crime SuspenStories #22 from 1954 remains one of the most notorious and influential horror comics ever printed. Even if you don't recognize the issue by name, you've undoubtedly encountered its chilling cover image: a man gripping an ax while holding his wife's decapitated head. This controversial comic played a pivotal role in sparking the anti-comics movement of the 1950s, leading to the creation of the Comics Code Authority and ultimately contributing to EC Comics' downfall.

Fortunately, EC Comics has recently been resurrected as a new imprint under Oni Press. In a fitting tribute, their latest release honors Johnny Craig's infamous cover artwork. IGN exclusively reveals Jay Stephens' cover for Catacomb of Torment #1, part of an ongoing series paying homage to classic EC Comics. See the modern interpretation below:

Catacomb of Torment headlines EC Comics' "Summer of Fear" initiative, featuring terrifying tales from acclaimed creators including John Arcudi, Marguerite Bennett, and Dan McDaid. The horror anthology will be accompanied by two other chilling titles: Corinna Bechko and Andrea Sorrentino's Blood Type, and J. Holtham's Cruel Universe 2 featuring artwork by Kano and Greg Smallwood.

"Our EC Comics revival has become Oni Press's most successful line in nearly three decades," stated Oni Press President Hunter Gorinson. "Following last year's successful launches, we're pushing boundaries further - making the content bolder, more expansive, and more visceral as EC enters its second year of rebirth."

Oni Press Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn added: "Collaborating on EC Comics has been tremendously inspiring for our entire creative team. We're thrilled to continue revitalizing these classic morality tales with today's top storytelling talent - this summer's releases particularly exemplify that creative spirit."
