Capcom's Revival of Classic IPs Continues: Okami and Onimusha Lead the Charge

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom has confirmed its commitment to revitalizing its classic intellectual properties (IPs), with the Okami and Onimusha franchises spearheading this initiative. This strategy aims to deliver high-quality content to players by leveraging Capcom's extensive game library.

Okami and Onimusha: A New Dawn

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

A December 13th press release announced new entries in both the Onimusha and Okami series. The next Onimusha title, set in Edo-period Kyoto, is slated for a 2026 release. A new Okami sequel is also in development, helmed by the original game's director and development team, though a release date remains undisclosed.

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom explicitly stated its focus on reactivating dormant IPs lacking recent releases. This strategy, they explained, is designed to boost corporate value by creating high-quality, efficient games from its vast catalog.

Alongside these revivals, Capcom is also developing Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both anticipated for 2025. This commitment to classic IPs doesn't preclude new projects; recent releases include Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal.

Fan Favorites and Future Titles: Clues from the "Super Elections"

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom's February 2024 "Super Elections," a fan vote for desired sequels and remakes, offers potential hints about future projects. The results highlighted strong demand for Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire.

These franchises, largely inactive for extended periods (Dino Crisis and Darkstalkers' last installments were released in 1997 and 2003, respectively, while Breath of Fire 6 was an online game shut down in 2017), are prime candidates for remasters or sequels. While Capcom remains cautious about specific announcements, the "Super Elections" provide valuable insight into player preferences, particularly given the popularity of Onimusha and Okami in the voting.
