Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Reportedly In the Works With Sarah Michelle Gellar Returning

Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role as Buffy, albeit as a recurring character, while the series focuses on a new Slayer.

Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao ( Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved.

While Whedon helmed the original Buffy series and its film predecessor, he faced accusations of creating a toxic work environment during production of both Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.

Plot details remain scarce beyond the central focus on a new Slayer and Gellar’s potential return.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight demons, vampires, and other supernatural creatures. Aided by friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles, she battled evil for seven seasons (1997-2003). The story continued through the spin-off series, Angel, and subsequent canonical comic books.
