Borderlands 4 Launch Moved Up, Sparks GTA 6 Speculation

Gearbox’s highly anticipated first-person shooter Borderlands 4 will launch nearly two weeks ahead of schedule, according to an early-released video featuring development chief Randy Pitchford.

The game’s release date has shifted from September 23 to September 12 across all platforms including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

"Development is exceeding expectations," Pitchford announced in the footage. "The team is firing on all cylinders, which allows us to bring forward Borderlands 4's launch to September 12."

The unexpected schedule change immediately raises questions about whether this strategic move relates to Grand Theft Auto VI's looming fall 2025 release window. While GTA 6's exact launch date remains unspecified, the massive title could overshadow competing games launching during the same period.

Industry analysts note the interesting corporate relationship between the franchises. Both Borderlands (published by 2K Games) and GTA (developed by Rockstar) fall under Take-Two Interactive's corporate umbrella. This structure theoretically allows for coordinated scheduling decisions at the highest levels.

The advanced Borderlands 4 release date suggests Take-Two may be creating strategic spacing between its major titles. This theory gains credence considering Mafia: The Old Country’s planned summer 2025 launch.

When questioned earlier this year about potential release overlap concerns, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized careful scheduling: "We plan releases to respect players' time with each title. Quality gaming experiences tend to complement rather than compete with each other."

Despite current fall 2025 projections, Zelnick cautiously acknowledged potential delays for GTA 6: "While we're confident, absolute assurances often prove premature in game development." Industry observers now speculate whether Rockstar's flagship title might slip into early 2026.

A dedicated PlayStation State of Play presentation detailing Borderlands 4 is expected shortly.
