Conquer the Iconic Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The Battle of Hulao Gate, a legendary clash in the Dynasty Warriors series, presents a significant challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. This guide will help you overcome this difficult stage in Chapter 2, your objective being the defeat of Dong Zhuo.

Initial Strategy:

Begin by capturing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right corner. After securing two, a cutscene will trigger, introducing mounted cavalry. Continue your base conquest; defeating Zhang Liao, the cavalry commander, rewards you with the twin pike weapon. Once all bases are under your control, assault Hulao Gate.

Facing Dong Zhuo's Forces:

The initial assault on the gate is chaotic. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he unleashes his Grand Tactic, weakening the defenses and paving your path.

Lu Bu's Intervention:

Dong Zhuo will deploy Lu Bu. Avoid direct confrontation. Lu Bu is overwhelmingly powerful at this stage. Instead, focus on eliminating enemy officers around the main battle to maintain morale, which Lu Bu significantly drains. Lu Bu will eventually target your main base and Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to pursue him; Liu Bei's forces will temporarily contain Lu Bu, giving you time to defeat Dong Zhuo. This creates a time constraint; if Liu Bei's forces are routed, Lu Bu will defeat Yuan Shao, ending the mission.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

Once Lu Bu departs, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Capture the northern and western bases to prepare for the final assault. With your forces ready, attack Dong Zhuo.

Dong Zhuo's Grand Tactics:

Dong Zhuo will employ two Grand Tactics involving fireballs. The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage (if available) to break through enemy lines and eliminate the soldiers and officers guarding the catapults. Your forces will then destroy the catapults, ending the tactic.

The second tactic requires defeating an officer. Proceed to the stairs on the right, encountering an officer and Diaochan, who has joined Dong Zhuo. If possible, duel Diaochan to simplify the encounter.

After thwarting the second Grand Tactic, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should be strong enough to overwhelm his remaining troops. Dian Wei might even initiate a Grand Tactic, further assisting your advance. While a duel is tempting, a standard defeat of Dong Zhuo is sufficient at this point.
