Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 04,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a crucial choice: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This decision, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the game's outcome and the party's fate.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Decision

Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this choice, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This final decision carries significant weight, potentially leading to companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) may be needed to influence companion choices.

Spoiler Warning: The following details the consequences of each choice.

Should You Free Orpheus?

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Choice

This decision hinges on player priorities. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

  • Siding with the Emperor: The Emperor absorbs Orpheus's knowledge, potentially alienating Lae'zel and Karlach due to Orpheus's demise. This grants a tactical advantage against the Netherbrain but might displease players attached to these companions.

  • Freeing Orpheus: Freeing Orpheus causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might still become a Mind Flayer, but Orpheus joins the fight, potentially sacrificing himself to save others.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation, but free Orpheus if you're willing to risk it for a potentially more satisfying outcome. The Emperor's choice might lead to Lae'zel's betrayal and Karlach's return to Avernus.

The Moral Dilemma:

The "good" choice depends on player values, but ultimately boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him, while others might find Voss and Lae'zel's demands overly forceful. The Gith's self-centered nature contrasts with the Emperor's generally benevolent intentions, even if his plan involves potential sacrifice. While the Emperor's path might lead to a Mind Flayer transformation, it's arguably a morally consistent one. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings, so strategic choices can lead to a preferable outcome for everyone involved.
