AMD Unveils Next-Gen Gaming Laptop Chips Using Last-Gen Architecture

AMD has unveiled its next-generation Ryzen 8000 processors tailored for gaming laptops, spearheaded by the powerful Ryzen 9 8945HX. Unlike the Ryzen AI 300 series chips introduced earlier this year, these new processors leverage the proven Zen 4 architecture from the last generation.

AMD is rolling out four new high-performance processors for gaming laptops. The flagship Ryzen 9 8945HX boasts 16 cores and 32 threads with a boost clock reaching up to 5.4GHz. At the other end of the spectrum, the Ryzen 7 8745HX comes equipped with 8 cores, 16 threads, and a boost clock of 5.1GHz. These new processors closely mirror the specifications of their predecessors; for instance, the Ryzen 9 7945HX also featured 16 cores and a 5.4GHz boost clock with 80MB of cache.

These Ryzen 8000 series processors are set to be integrated with the top-tier graphics chips in high-end gaming laptops. My recent review of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile highlighted performance limitations when paired with the lower-power AMD Ryzen AI HX 370, despite its newer Zen 5 architecture. In contrast, the Ryzen 9 8945HX can be configured with a TDP ranging from 55W to 75W, promising a substantial performance boost, though the advantage could have been even more pronounced with a Zen 5 chip at the same power level.
