AI Acting Slammed by Nicolas Cage

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 20,2025

Nicolas Cage has issued a strong warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." In his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor (Dream Scenario), Cage argued that AI is incapable of capturing the complexities of the human condition.

Variety reported Cage's comments, where he expressed his concerns about AI's encroachment on the artistic process. He emphasized the importance of human creativity and emotional depth in acting, stating that AI-manipulated performances lack authenticity and heart. He cautioned against allowing financial interests to overshadow artistic integrity.

"Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us," Cage stated. He believes that allowing AI to even slightly alter a performance will ultimately lead to a complete erosion of artistic truth, resulting in a product driven solely by financial gain. He urged actors to protect themselves from AI interference, advocating for authentic and honest self-expression.

Cage's stance echoes the concerns of other actors, particularly in the voice acting field, where AI-generated recreations of performances have become more common, even in major video game productions. Voice actors like Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have publicly criticized the use of AI, highlighting the threat to their livelihoods. Cockle acknowledged AI's inevitability but warned of its inherent dangers and potential to deprive actors of income.

The film industry's response to AI is divided. While renowned director Tim Burton expressed his unease with AI-generated art, describing it as "very disturbing," Zack Snyder (Justice League, Rebel Moon) has encouraged filmmakers to embrace AI technology rather than resisting its advancements.
