This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, creating a legendary game library still seeing re-releases. While these titles once challenged Nintendo, they're now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands as a successful 2.5D platformer. Playing as a charming, floppy-eared creature, you navigate a dream world to thwart a dangerous threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel isn't as strong, the collection is a must-have.
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII introduced the JRPG genre to the Western market, becoming Square Enix's biggest success and propelling the PlayStation to the top. While a remake exists, the original offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, launching it onto a larger stage. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a standout, feeling less philosophical and more action-packed, reminiscent of G.I. Joe. Its fun gameplay is a major draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series into 3D. While the polygons show their age, their charm remains. Vivid colors, engaging enemy capture mechanics, and inventive bosses make this a compelling shooter.
While I could fill this list with Square Enix games, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, though failing to match Chrono Trigger's popularity, stands as a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit underdeveloped, cast. Its soundtrack is also legendary.
While I enjoy most Mega Man games, my opinion is likely skewed by nostalgia. For non-fans, I recommend Mega Man X and Mega Man X4. X4 feels exceptionally well-crafted, offering a brief period of balance before the series veered again. The Legacy Collection lets you decide.
Sony published many non-owned titles. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure elements with solid action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins designer, it starts easy but becomes challenging.
Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port formed the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright and cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs. Its combat system is also a highlight.
Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures varied in quality. The original, focusing on tomb raiding over action, is arguably the best. This collection includes the first three games.
A Japanese-only release, moon deconstructs the RPG genre, functioning more as an adventure game. While not consistently fun, its unique approach and message are compelling.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch in the comments! Thank you for reading.
