Despite lukewarm initial reception, the PS5 Pro's sales projections remain robust. Analysts predict strong sales, comparable to the PS4 Pro, even with a significant price increase.

Analyst Assessment of PS5 Pro Sales Trajectory Amidst Price Hike

The $700 PS5 Pro's launch has prompted analysis of its potential sales performance. Ampere Analysis' Piers Harding-Rolls notes a substantial price difference (40-50%) between the PS5 and PS5 Pro, significantly larger than the PS4 and PS4 Pro gap. Despite this, Ampere projects approximately 1.3 million PS5 Pro units sold during its November 2024 launch window – 400,000 fewer than the PS4 Pro's initial launch sales. Harding-Rolls acknowledges the price may dampen demand, but believes PlayStation enthusiasts will remain less price-sensitive. The PS4 Pro ultimately sold around 14.5 million units, representing about 12% of total PS4 sales, with a projected 13 million unit sell-through over five years. Sell-through, in this context, refers to direct consumer purchases from retailers.

PS5 Pro Capabilities Fuel Speculation of a New Handheld Console

Mark Cerny, PS5 lead architect, highlighted the PS5 Pro's performance enhancements for PSVR2 games. The upgraded GPU will allow for higher resolution outputs, though specific titles haven't been announced. The PS5 Pro's AI-assisted upscaling, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, will also support PSVR2. Furthermore, PS5 Pro compatibility with accessories like the PS Portal has reignited speculation about a potential new PlayStation handheld console, echoing earlier rumors of a device capable of running PS5 games. While unconfirmed, the PS5 Pro's capabilities suggest a possible evolution of PlayStation's handheld offerings.
