Preparing Young Children for Hospital Visits: The "HC And" App
Developed in collaboration with the Oncology Department at R. H.C. Andersen Children and Youth Hospital, hospitalized children, their families, and 10:30 Visual Communication, "HC And - When mother or father has cancer" is a patient information app designed to ease anxiety in children aged 4-7. This app addresses the challenges of explaining complex medical terms to young children facing a parent's cancer diagnosis.
"HC And" uses a child-friendly approach, featuring narration in a child's voice and engaging animations. The interactive format, suitable for tablets, mobile phones, and touch screens, leverages the learning-through-play method effective for this age group.
Recognizing that young children can quickly become overwhelmed with information, "HC And" presents concise, age-appropriate content in short, easily digestible segments. This makes it ideal for children new to the hospital environment or facing a parent's cancer diagnosis for the first time.
The app comprises seven short, sequential stories that address common questions about cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Hospital staff can utilize this resource as an educational tool to facilitate a shared understanding between the child and medical professionals.
