«Балансирование между протоколами безопасности от COVID-19 и сохранением художественной целостности — плюс обеспечение безопасности актёров и съёмочной группы, где ошибка могла привести к летальному исходу — сделало весь процесс невыносимым», — рассказал Уоттс в ходе мастер-класса 26 июня на мальтийском фестивале Mediterrane Film Festival. Он добавил: «Проблемы постпродакшена усугубили это — рабочие процессы визуальных эффектов, зависящие от глобальных подрядчиков, столкнулись с беспрецедентными нарушениями цепочек поставок. Традиционные пути визуальных эффектов попросту рухнули под давлением пандемии».

Уоттс — недавно продюсер и соавтор сюжетных элементов «Финальное предчувствие: Кровь линий» — уже принял решение работать над «Первыми шагами» между «Спайдер-меном: Далеко от дома» и «Без пути домой». Однако, когда началась предпродакшн-фаза, творческое выгорание обрушилось на него. «Пандемия нанесла серьёзный урон кинопроизводству блокбастеров, и я понял, что не смогу обеспечить визионерское качество, которое заслуживает «Фантастическая четвёрка»», — признался он. «Марвел полностью меня поняли; они сами видели, насколько тяжёлым было это путешествие. Иногда отказ от проекта — это больше, чем поступок, когда ты идёшь дальше, не имея полной творческой энергии».

Хотя он с энтузиазмом отнёсся к предстоящему адаптационному проекту Мэтта Шакмана, Уоттс признаёт, что просмотр финального продукта будет ощущаться как нечто нереальное. В главных ролях — Педро Паскаль, Ванесса Кирби и Джозеф Квайн. «Фантастическая четвёрка: Первые шаги» выходит в прокат 25 июля.
